Bioinspired Functional Materials (BFM) Laboratory
The BFM lab research interests focus on experimental and theoretical investigations of natural and synthetic composite materials across all length scales, particularly in the field of biomimetic and bioinspired engineering, as well as biomedical engineering, covering various topics on nanomechanics, biomechanics, biomimetic design, 3D fabrication and prototyping, biomedical material design, synthesis and evaluation. Currently, the lab is working on 3D printing-related projects on 1) the development of a 3D printing system for direct fabrication of biomimetic curved thin membranes with various non-printable inks (e.g., slow-curing acrylic polymers, silicon rubber, chemically-crosslinked hydrogels) and 2) the development of biomedical devices with improved human-device interfaces (e.g., orthopaedic cast, microneedle patches). Moreover, various bioinspired applications for cell and biomedical manufacturing have been investigated in collaboration with A*star researchers and overseas research groups in USA, Korea and China.
